Living at Home During a Scottsdale Kitchen Remodel

October 15, 2026

Scottsdale buying guide · 27 · Homeowner decision series

A beautiful cabinet selection will not answer where you will wash dishes next month. Before a Scottsdale kitchen remodel begins, compare staying home throughout, leaving during selected phases, and moving out for the main construction period. The right choice depends on which household services remain usable, the contractor’s work plan and your own routines. Use this guide to make those conditions part of the project conversation before demolition or nonreturnable purchases.

Your home. A clearer way to buy.

Compare the details. Then decide.

Bring your ideas, drawings or an existing quote. Explore the design and pricing before deciding whether to join.

No payment or membership is required to make a request. HIBC is a buying program, not a remodeling contractor.

Start with the services your household actually needs

Write down a normal weekday from breakfast to bedtime. Include drinking water, food storage, meal preparation, dishwashing, bathroom access, medication storage if relevant, pets, work calls and school routines. Mark which activities currently depend on the kitchen or an adjacent passage. A spare room is only a possible temporary location until its suitability has been checked.

Ask the contractor which services may be interrupted, whether interruptions affect other rooms, and how you will receive advance notice. Distinguish a usable refrigerator from a refrigerator that is merely plugged in somewhere inaccessible.

Choose an occupancy plan by phase

Request an outline showing the conditions expected during demolition, trade work, cabinet installation, countertop work and final connections. For each phase, ask whether the household can remain, which areas are restricted, and who confirms a change in conditions. Do not turn an estimated completion date into permission to use unfinished space.

EPA’s remodeling guidance discusses separating occupants from work and controlling construction dust. Have the project professionals establish the protection, ventilation and cleanup arrangements; a makeshift cooking corner does not establish that occupancy is appropriate.

Price a temporary kitchen as a complete arrangement

List the proposed place for food storage, a preparation surface, approved cooking equipment, clean dishes and waste. Confirm the appliances’ intended use and ask the appropriate professional about power, water and ventilation before deciding the arrangement is workable. Do not improvise connections or use outdoor cooking equipment indoors.

Compare the cost of the actual arrangement with a realistic alternative: prepared meals, laundry or dishwashing services where needed, and temporary lodging. Count only added household spending attributable to the remodel. Your normal grocery budget is not automatically an additional project cost.

Create practical rules for the occupied house

Agree on entry, deliveries, parking, work hours, pets, occupied rooms, daily cleanup and who can authorize a changed work area. Identify an accessible route to essential rooms that the contractor has confirmed can remain available. Keep everyday belongings out of material storage and construction zones.

For an address within city jurisdiction, Scottsdale ties permit review to the work’s scope and trades. Confirm applicable HOA restrictions separately. Ask who handles any required inspections and what they mean for the next phase; a convenient household date should not override required acceptance.

Planning work in Old Town Scottsdale? Put the actual property entrance and material receiving location on your occupied-home plan. Ask how workers and deliveries will reach the kitchen while essential household routes remain available; the district name alone cannot answer that site-specific question.

Set a trigger for changing plans

Write down the conditions that would make staying impractical: loss of an essential service, inability to isolate the work, unavailable access or a household concern requiring professional advice. Name the person to contact and a backup place to stay. Keep an estimate for extending that arrangement separate from the contractor’s construction contingency.

For example, a late countertop may extend the time without an approved working sink even when cabinets look finished. Ask which milestone restores each service. Revisit the occupancy plan whenever the scope or sequence changes.

Use the household plan to judge the buying route

A complete materials quote should be considered alongside receiving, installation and the extra cost of living through the work. The order-approval guide can help keep a changed selection from quietly changing the schedule. Compare delivery commitments in writing rather than assuming a membership makes construction faster.

Home Improvement Buying Club is a buying program, not your remodeler or temporary-living coordinator. Discuss Gold when evaluating an eligible kitchen materials package; assess the membership fee against the whole purchase. A small replacement with limited materials may not justify joining.

Questions before your next step.

Can we always live at home during a kitchen remodel?

No. Have the contractor and relevant professionals assess the actual work, services and household needs. Reassess when conditions change; this worksheet is a planning aid, not an occupancy approval.

Does a working refrigerator mean the temporary kitchen is ready?

No. You still need an appropriate arrangement for the other activities you intend to perform, with equipment and connections checked by the responsible professionals.

Does HIBC manage our contractor’s schedule?

HIBC membership does not make HIBC the construction manager. Confirm design, purchasing, delivery and installation responsibilities separately with the parties providing those services.
