Scottsdale buying guide · 30 · Homeowner decision series
“Add new lights” is too vague to produce comparable kitchen quotes. One proposal may include decorative pendants while another includes the controls, cabinet lighting and electrical work that make the room usable. Build a lighting schedule around the tasks and atmosphere you want, then ask a designer and electrician to translate it into an installable plan. Resolve the differences before fixtures, cabinetry and surfaces are ordered.

Give each lighting layer a clear job
Start with three jobs: lighting the room generally, lighting the places where you work, and emphasizing selected features. Mark meal preparation, sink use, cooking and cleanup on the plan. Identify the features you want to see from adjoining rooms, then decide which decorative effects are optional.
Ask the designer to show how the proposed sources work together when people stand at the counters. Compare a daytime and an after-dark use scenario. A striking pendant can be part of the design, but its appearance alone does not prove the work areas are adequately addressed.
Compare output and appearance separately
The Department of Energy’s light-bulb buyer guidance distinguishes light output in lumens, power use in watts and light appearance expressed as color temperature. Use these specifications to compare what is proposed rather than treating wattage as a brightness description. The cited page includes federal purchasing material; its procurement rules and example savings are not a residential project quote.
Ask to review the intended light with your actual cabinet, counter and wall samples where possible. Record the selected appearance and model. A supplier’s substitution should preserve the reviewed characteristics or return to you for approval.

Specify how you want to control the room
Describe a few simple situations: bright meal preparation, an ordinary dinner, cleanup and a quieter evening. Ask which lighting groups operate together, where controls will be accessible, and what happens without a phone or network connection if smart features are proposed. Choose functions you will use rather than adding technology by default.
Compatibility needs model-level confirmation. Lutron’s LED compatibility guidance directs buyers to tested bulb and dimmer combinations. Have the responsible supplier or electrician verify your actual fixtures, drivers and controls; “dimmable” on two boxes is not a complete compatibility record.
Include the pieces concealed by the finished kitchen
Ask the quote to identify fixtures, lamps where separate, drivers, channels or mounting accessories, controls and any required wiring work. Confirm where serviceable components will be located and who coordinates them with cabinetry and backsplash details. Ask the installer to flag any items the cabinet order must accommodate before release.
Separate a product allowance from a fully specified installed item. If an allowance remains, identify what it covers, the selected price when known and how a difference will be approved. Do not compare a fixture-only price against a complete installed lighting package.
Resolve the local work and the final review
Scottsdale lists new or altered electrical circuits among work requiring permits. Ask the electrician to confirm the route for your actual scope and property; association approval, where applicable, is a separate check. Keep permit and installation responsibility explicit.
Agree how the completed lighting will be reviewed against the schedule: the installed models, intended controls, adjustment range and appearance with the finished materials. Record any unresolved concern for the responsible contractor. A photo of the room cannot verify every control function or replace the professional acceptance process.
For a Grayhawk kitchen, ask whether the lighting proposal stays entirely inside or also changes exterior elements. If exterior work is proposed, check the applicable association process separately. Keep the interior fixture schedule and any additional work clearly distinguished in the quote.
Turn the schedule into a useful materials comparison
Take the lighting schedule into your kitchen purchasing discussion along with the cabinet and appliance plans. The appliance and cabinet coordination guide helps connect those selections to the electrician’s scope. Ask for unavailable items or substitutions to be identified before treating the quote as complete.
For an HIBC comparison, confirm which products and independent showroom services are actually offered, then include outside electrical work and the membership fee. A few replacement lamps alone may not justify membership; an integrated remodel needs a comparison of the defined package, not an assumed discount.

Kitchen lighting quote schedule
Create a copy for each proposal. Ask the designer or electrician to fill gaps and verify the specified combinations; do not treat an unspecified accessory as included.

Questions before your next step.
Should I compare kitchen lighting by wattage?
Use output and appearance specifications as well as power use. Have the designer assess the actual room and tasks; the number printed on a lamp is not a complete lighting plan.
Are all dimmable LEDs compatible with every dimmer?
Do not assume that. Obtain confirmation for the exact proposed combination, including any separate driver, and retain the approved model list.
Can I choose cabinet lighting after the cabinets are ordered?
Ask the cabinet designer and electrician first. Mounting, wiring and service access may need coordination. Identify unresolved details before releasing affected cabinetry.
