Scottsdale buying guide · 38 · Homeowner decision series
A backsplash price per square foot can hide the decisions that make the finished wall look intentional. The tile is only one part of the purchase: layout, exposed edges, outlet details and preparation also need a scope. For your Scottsdale kitchen, build the same wall-by-wall brief for each bidder so you can compare the finished result rather than a small material sample.

Draw the actual boundaries before counting tile
Mark where the backsplash begins and ends on each wall. Include the area behind cooking equipment, returns at exposed ends and the transition to windows, shelves or upper cabinets. Use measured drawings or photographs for discussion, then have the responsible professional verify the dimensions for ordering.
Choose the boundaries deliberately. A short return and a full-height feature wall are different scopes even if they use the same tile. Ask how each proposer calculates the quantity and allows for the chosen layout, cuts and retained spare material. Avoid applying an invented universal waste percentage to every shape and pattern.
Approve a layout, not just an individual tile
Daltile publishes separate wall and backsplash pattern guides, which illustrate how many layout choices can sit behind the same tile selection. Ask the installer to show the proposed starting point, cuts at visible edges and alignment around focal areas. These examples do not establish the products HIBC can supply.
View several samples together when possible. Record the tile identifier, finish, size description and approved grout or joint appearance with the layout. If a sheeted or patterned product is proposed, ask how its repeat and cuts will be handled. Keep one preferred layout and one priced alternate; otherwise several changing details can make the comparison difficult to interpret.

Ask what the installer expects to find behind the old finish
Daltile’s wall-tile guidance calls for suitable prepared surfaces and repair of damaged, loose or uneven areas. Ask the installer to explain the preparation included for your actual wall and selected product. A tile-only allowance should not be mistaken for a complete demolition and installation scope.
If the wall cannot be fully assessed until removal, ask how that uncertainty will be documented, priced and approved. Identify protection of the countertop, cabinets and appliances, along with debris removal and final cleanup. Do not authorize an open-ended extra simply because a proposal uses the word preparation; request a description of the included work and the process for anything additional.
Resolve edges, outlets and fixtures before installation
Identify every exposed tile edge and ask for the proposed trim or finishing detail. Add the exact items to the quote. Review outlets, switches, under-cabinet lights, shelves and range-hood attachments with the relevant professionals so the new surface thickness and finished appearance are considered together.
For a backsplash in South Scottsdale, the city’s Southern Scottsdale planning resources identify the area, but do not describe the wall inside your home. Have the actual outlet and attachment work reviewed. Scottsdale identifies altered electrical circuits separately from cosmetic work. Confirm jurisdiction and required trade arrangements, and check applicable association requirements independently. Do not infer wiring condition, building age or a permitted installation method from the neighborhood name.
Compare a finished wall scope and an uncertainty list
Separate the tile purchase, trim, setting materials, grout or finishing products, preparation and labor in the comparison. Ask which items are included in the installer’s price and which the homeowner must supply. Record delivery and return terms for materials separately from the installer’s work terms.
Use a hypothetical check: if one quote includes removal and edge trim while the other includes only installation over a ready wall, the lower total is not yet a comparable offer. Request the missing scope before choosing. Ask what happens if the selected tile changes, because a different format or pattern may require a new labor and quantity review.
Turn the tile unit price into an actual order
Before choosing the lower backsplash price, ask both sellers to price the quantity you would actually buy. Keep a separate purchase line for each exact tile, trim or accessory. A price per square foot and a price per carton become comparable only after you identify what each purchase includes.
01 · Confirm the quantity
Start with the installer’s order requirement.
Record the measured area and the installer-confirmed total for the selected layout, including its cuts and agreed spare material. Ask what is already included so you do not add the same allowance twice. Do not replace that review with a universal extra-tile percentage.
Approved order requirement: ______ square feet.
Product and layout revision: ______.
02 · Match the selling unit
Price what the seller will ship.
Ask whether the product is sold by piece, sheet, carton or another unit. Record the coverage and price for that exact selling unit. If whole cartons are required, divide the approved order requirement by the confirmed coverage per carton and round up to a whole carton.
Coverage per selling unit: ______.
Units to purchase: ______ × price per unit: $______.
See a quantity-only example
Assume the installer has already included cuts and agreed spares in a 52-square-foot order requirement. If the chosen product covers 10 square feet per carton and the seller requires whole cartons, 52 ÷ 10 = 5.2, so the purchase is six cartons covering 60 square feet. Price all six cartons. Do not add the same cuts-and-spares allowance again. These are invented quantities to explain the calculation, not measurements or a product recommendation for your home.
Finish the purchase line: product total + separately charged trim, delivery, handling and applicable tax = the amount to compare. Count anything bundled only once; leave an unpriced charge marked unknown. Keep installation and wall preparation in the separate scope comparison above.
Record the seller’s written return terms beside the quantity. Do not subtract a hoped-for refund for unused tile from the initial purchase total. If this purchase is part of a larger HIBC project, count membership dues once across that project, not on every tile line.
Daltile’s purchasing guidance highlights shipping, handling and other fees that can change an apparently low product price. Confirm the actual seller’s terms; this source does not establish HIBC product availability.
Decide whether the backsplash belongs in a larger HIBC purchase
Bring the measured brief and approved selections to HIBC when comparing a broader kitchen materials purchase. Confirm what can actually be quoted through the independent showroom arrangements and keep the installer’s responsibilities separate. A named tile manufacturer in an educational source is not a promise of club availability.
For a backsplash-only refresh, compare a standalone route with the full cost of membership before deciding. For a larger cabinet and surface purchase, include the backsplash as a clear line in the materials schedule. The useful outcome is a complete wall treatment with known details and a process for surprises, not simply the lowest tile price.

Questions before your next step.
Can I compare backsplash bids by price per square foot?
Only after the included scope is clear. Compare the same measured area, product, pattern, preparation, edge details and related work; a unit price alone may omit important items.
How much extra tile should I order?
Ask the responsible professional to calculate it for the selected format, layout, cuts and desired spare material. Confirm package quantities and return terms rather than applying one percentage to every project.
Does changing the pattern affect the quote?
Ask the installer to recheck the layout, quantity and labor scope before approving a change. Keep the revised selection and any price difference together in writing.
