Scottsdale buying guide · 34 · Homeowner decision series
Two kitchens can have a similar appearance with the doors closed and work differently when you open them. Framed versus frameless is therefore a practical access decision as well as a design preference. Use the same layout and a few real household items to compare the options for your Scottsdale kitchen. The useful result is a verified fit, not a winner chosen from a label.

Understand what the label describes
Wellborn describes frameless construction as cabinetry without the front face frame. Its explanation illustrates the distinction; its product dimensions and options should not be applied to other lines. Ask the seller to show you the frame or front edge of the actual cabinet being quoted, with a door open.
Door appearance is a separate selection. Ask how the chosen door sits relative to the cabinet front and how much of the surrounding structure is visible. Compare a full cabinet sample rather than a loose door alone. A showroom photograph can help establish your style preference, but it cannot tell you the opening through which a large serving tray must pass.
Measure the useful opening, not just the cabinet width
Bring dimensions for a wide tray, a large pan and a frequently used countertop appliance. Ask the designer to record the clear opening and usable storage space in the proposed cabinets, including the effect of hardware and any interior fitting. Keep the outside cabinet dimension alongside those measurements so you are comparing like with like.
Use a simple demonstration: can the item pass through the opening, sit in its planned position and come back out without removing unrelated items? Try this with the actual sample where possible. Avoid a blanket percentage claim about extra storage. The useful gain depends on the exact cabinet, drawer, hinge and arrangement you select.

Review doors, drawers and the neighboring room together
Ask for the operating position of the doors and drawers on a dimensioned plan. Pay attention to cabinets beside a wall, corner, refrigerator or island return. Confirm any necessary fillers, end treatments and handle clearances. These details belong in the price and drawing before the order, even when they are visually subtle.
Compare the same household task in both options. A pantry that looks open with no shelves installed may behave differently with interior drawers and stored goods. Ask who verifies accessory compatibility and who makes final adjustments after installation. Do not assume a product called “full access” removes every obstruction in every configuration.
Ask the installer about the actual Scottsdale room
Have the installer review existing wall and floor conditions, the proposed cabinet system and the manufacturer installation documentation. Ask which preparation, fitting and finishing work is included. If one option changes the required installer scope, put that difference beside the product quote rather than discovering it after purchase.
For an Old Town Scottsdale kitchen, test the proposed cabinet at the actual wall or corner rather than assuming a nearby display has the same constraints. Scottsdale distinguishes cabinet replacement from work involving structural changes or trades. Confirm jurisdiction and the complete scope, especially when services move. If your building has shared access or association requirements, check them separately; no particular building type is assumed.
Compare evidence without declaring one system superior
KCMA states that framed and frameless cabinets are both eligible for its quality certification. That makes it useful to ask about the actual line’s evidence instead of treating either system as inherently unqualified. Request the same level of specification, sample review and warranty information for both offers.
Choose three criteria you can test: access for your largest regular-use item, the door appearance you prefer and the complete installed arrangement. Record what you observed and what is still only a verbal promise. If both systems meet the brief, price and design preference can decide. If neither resolves a difficult location, revise that location before ordering the entire kitchen.
Request two comparable routes, then choose
Ask HIBC to review your preferred layout and the access questions that remain. Confirm which product options can actually be offered through the relevant independent showroom arrangements. Keep the cabinet count, finish and essential accessories consistent across any alternatives so the purchasing comparison remains meaningful.
Include membership dues and separate installation when comparing the full route. A different cabinet system does not itself prove a financial benefit. Your final instruction should name the line, construction, door treatment and accepted drawing. Keep the measured access test with that record so later substitutions can be reviewed against the reason you chose the product.

Questions before your next step.
Does frameless automatically mean a modern-looking kitchen?
No single construction label should decide the appearance. Review the actual door style, finish, front treatment and installed sample. Confirm which combinations the proposed line offers.
Can I rely on the nominal cabinet width to compare storage?
Use it as one reference, then request the clear opening and usable internal dimensions for the actual configuration. Hardware and interior fittings also need to be included in the comparison.
Which option should I choose if both fit?
Choose using the complete installed price, preferred appearance, documented product specification and service terms. Preserve the same layout and essential features when comparing the offers.
