Kitchen design inspiration: white cabinetry and a warm wood island

How to Compare Kitchen Cabinet Quotes Without Missing the Real Cost

September 07, 20263 min read

Two cabinet quotes can look similar and describe very different kitchens. The useful question is not simply “Which total is lower?” It is “What am I receiving, what is excluded, and what will I pay to complete the same project?” A clear comparison puts you in control before you commit.

Freeze one plan for the comparison

Give each quoting provider the same cabinet layout, appliance information and project requirements. Identify the version and date of the plan. If a provider recommends a different arrangement, request that alternative separately so you can evaluate the design change and its price without confusing the baseline.

Ask for cabinet quantities and sizes, including tall cabinets, wall cabinets, base cabinets and any specialty units. Check that an island, pantry or upper cabinet shown in a rendering also appears in the written quote. Pictures should support the specification, not substitute for it.

Check the details that change the offer

Compare the door style, material description, finish, exposed end treatment, drawer configuration and included hardware. Ask for written product specifications where an important detail is unclear. Similar color names or a shared description such as “wood cabinets” do not establish that products are equivalent.

Review fillers, panels, toe kicks, trim, handles, waste pull-outs and other storage accessories. Mark every item as included, excluded or undecided. If you have not selected an item, ask whether the quote contains an allowance and what happens when the final selection differs.

Separate products from project services

Identify who measures, designs, delivers, unloads, assembles and installs. Record demolition, disposal, plumbing, electrical work, countertops and appliance connections separately. Confirm responsibility for reviewing the final plan and addressing a measurement or ordering discrepancy.

Ask about taxes, delivery charges, shipping damage, replacement procedures, order changes and return restrictions. Obtain current written terms from each provider. A quote that excludes installation is not directly comparable with an installed package until you account for the difference.

Include membership in the arithmetic

HIBC does not add a product markup. Membership is a separate cost and belongs in your comparison. Gold is $4,995 for the first year, with a $495 annual renewal beginning Year 2. Do not subtract membership from the calculation just because product pricing is attractive.

For illustration only, suppose a comparable retail product package totals $30,000 and an alternative product package totals $22,000. Adding a $4,995 first-year membership makes the second option $26,995 before any differing charges. The difference is $3,005—not $8,000. These figures are hypothetical, not a quote or a promised saving.

Use a simple decision sheet

Create columns for provider, plan version, product specifications, product total, membership, taxes, delivery, installation and exclusions. Add a final column for unresolved questions. Only label a figure “total” when its scope is clear. Keep service, selection and accountability in the decision alongside price.
