Make an existing-and-proposed project brief
Photograph each kitchen wall and mark what stays, what moves and what remains undecided. Separate a cabinet replacement from an option that relocates the sink, range or walls. That distinction gives your project professional a useful starting point and helps keep an attractive product quote from concealing construction work.
If your home is in a managed building, request its renovation and delivery rules before committing to large cabinets or an appliance package. Do not assume another building’s arrangements apply.
Record appliance model numbers and approximate openings.
List any proposed changes to water, power, exhaust or doorways.
Identify who will verify measurements before ordering.
Use the District’s alteration guidance for a DC address
DC’s Department of Buildings identifies Alteration and Repair as the permit type for interior kitchen remodeling. Its guidance calls for existing and proposed floor plans when required by the scope, and a cost estimate for every project to assess permit fees. Bring that scope and estimate to the person handling your application.
The Washington metro includes communities outside the District. A DC permit route is not guidance for an Arlington, Alexandria, Maryland or West Virginia property. Confirm the actual jurisdiction and building type first.

Can an initial review start before I have permit drawings?
Yes. Photos, an approximate sketch and a list of intended changes can support an initial online discussion. They do not replace the drawings, permits, final measurements or professional assessments needed for your actual project.
