An induction cooktop can create a beautifully simple cooking surface. The cabinet underneath it, however, needs a more detailed plan than the glass top suggests.
For a San Francisco kitchen remodel, evaluate the way you cook first, then coordinate the cooktop, cabinet, countertop and ventilation. Pay particular attention to two different needs: airflow serving the appliance itself and ventilation serving the cooking area. They are not the same design question.
Try the cooking experience before fixing the layout
The San Francisco Environment Department's home-electrification resources include ways to explore or try induction cooking. Review current program arrangements and eligibility directly rather than assuming a device or appointment is available.
A trial can help you evaluate controls, cookware handling and the cooking habits you want the new kitchen to support. Record what you enjoy and what you would like to test on a full-size appliance.
Keep the trial in perspective. A portable unit does not establish the electrical, cabinet or ventilation requirements for a built-in cooktop. Use the experience to refine the appliance shortlist, then obtain the exact product documentation.
Choose the cooking arrangement before choosing the base cabinet
Decide whether you want a built-in cooktop with drawers below, a cooktop above a compatible oven, a separate wall-oven arrangement or another configuration.
Compare how each option affects cookware storage and the movement of hot dishes. Consider the controls, usable cooking zones and the space where you set ingredients or utensils.
Record exact model numbers for shortlisted products. A nominal cooktop width is not enough to establish the cabinet opening, countertop cutout or compatible appliance arrangement beneath it.
Ask the appliance professional to identify approved combinations where more than one product occupies the same cabinet zone. Do not assume two appliances can be stacked because their outside dimensions appear to fit.
Separate appliance cooling from cooking ventilation
The distinction becomes clear in a current manufacturer's U.S./Canada induction planning guide. It describes cool-air supply and cabinet openings for the covered models and directs installers to the full installation instructions.
Those openings serve the appliance. The hood or other specified cooking-ventilation system serves a different purpose. Resolving one does not automatically resolve the other.
Have the designer, appliance installer and ventilation professional explain both systems on the same drawing. Use the exact model's requirements rather than copying a gap dimension from another product or a photograph.

Assign one person to collect the answers, while keeping technical decisions with the relevant professionals. A coordinated drawing should reveal a conflict before it becomes a cabinet-order change.
Protect the storage you expect to have
Ask the cabinet designer to show the actual usable drawer interiors beneath or beside the cooktop. Include hardware, required clearances and any parts of the appliance or ventilation arrangement occupying that area.
Measure the cookware intended for those drawers. Check lids and handles as well as pan bodies. A deep-looking front can conceal a shallower interior than you expected.
If the preferred configuration reduces storage, compare another arrangement before approving the plan. Moving cookware to an adjacent drawer bank may work well, while a separate oven location may change other parts of the kitchen. Judge the complete cooking zone rather than only the cabinet directly below the glass.
Evaluate the ventilation option as a product system
Ask the professional to compare appropriate ventilation arrangements for the selected cooktop and room. Identify what is included in the proposed system and what remains part of separate trade work.
For a hood, review its visual relationship to the cabinets and the cooking surface. For any integrated or downdraft approach under consideration, ask what space its components need and how that affects the cabinetry.
Manufacturer documentation can differ by configuration. For example, this induction product resource page lists separate installation resources for overhead and downdraft arrangements. Select documents that match the actual proposed system, not merely the product family.
Choose the countertop mounting detail deliberately
Ask whether the selected cooktop supports the mounting appearance you prefer and what that means for the chosen countertop material.
Have the fabricator and appliance installer confirm the cutout, support and installation details. A flush appearance and a surface-mounted appearance can require different coordination; use the manufacturer's terminology for the actual product.
Do not authorize fabrication from a generic appliance width. Keep the accepted cooktop model and document revision attached to the countertop drawing. If the model changes, request review before the cutout is made.
Include the electrical review early
Give the qualified electrical professional the exact appliance specifications and proposed location. Ask that person to assess the existing supply, required work and appropriate connection arrangement.
Keep that scope visible in the project budget. A cooktop purchase does not automatically include the electrical work necessary for the selected installation.
Similarly, ask who coordinates the ventilation installation and any work affecting surrounding cabinets or finishes. These are practical product dependencies to resolve while the design remains flexible, not details to leave until delivery.
Compare complete cooking-zone packages
Compare proposals using the same cooktop, ventilation arrangement, cabinet storage and countertop detail. Include the appliance, any specified accessories, cabinetry, fabrication, installation and identified trade work.
Ask which quoted items are allowances and which are fully selected. Keep a second option if an unresolved compatibility question affects the first.
