Ask what arrives ready for installation
When comparing countertop packages for a San Diego kitchen, ask the fabricator which operations it expects to complete in its shop and which may remain at your home. Have the provider identify the sink, faucet, appliance and edge details needed to settle that plan before fabrication.
A proposal saying only fabrication and installation leaves an important question unanswered: what happens if the pieces need an adjustment after arrival? Ask who evaluates a mismatch, who can authorize changed work and how the provider explains any price or timing change before proceeding.
Keep worker protection with the responsible provider
Cal/OSHA's silica guidance describes employer responsibilities for work involving respirable crystalline silica. It identifies countertop fabrication activities and associated cleanup, and distinguishes general-industry requirements from construction requirements. The responsible employer must determine and follow the requirements applicable to its operations.
Use that information to ask the provider about responsibility, work location and household preparation. Request its explanation of the planned work area, access restrictions, cleanup and handback to the household. Do not treat a promise to cover nearby furniture as a complete worker-protection plan or ask household members to perform fabrication cleanup.
Compare a planned scope with an unresolved allowance
Place onsite adjustments and cleanup on the quotation alongside delivery and installation. Record what is included, what remains conditional and who will answer each question. A shop-fabricated package is not a guarantee that the home will require no further work; ask how an unexpected condition is assessed and communicated.
This is a purchasing worksheet, not an exposure assessment or instructions for cutting, drilling or cleanup. Qualified providers handle those methods. HIBC does not certify the workplace or serve as the fabricator or installer.
Keep the agreed work scope with your San Diego kitchen plan. For construction permission, use the separate San Diego permit-route guide and confirm the actual property and work with the responsible authority. Chula Vista, Carlsbad and unincorporated county properties have separate local processes; California employer guidance does not establish a city permit exemption.
Your decision worksheet
| Check | Record before buying |
|---|---|
| Shop work | List operations expected before the pieces reach your home. |
| Site work | Record anticipated adjustments and unresolved conditions. |
| Provider | Name the business responsible for each work stage. |
| Access | Obtain provider instructions for preparation and restricted areas. |
| Cleanup | Identify the responsible provider and household handback process. |
| Changes | Record who approves revised work, scope, price and timing. |
A worked buying example
Hypothetical example: one quote includes undefined onsite adjustments while another identifies planned shop work and a procedure for site changes. The homeowner asks both providers to describe the remaining work, cleanup and authorization process, then compares the clarified packages without assuming either promises a dust-free installation.
Questions to settle before ordering
Does shop fabrication eliminate all work at my home?
Ask the fabricator what remains onsite and how it handles an unexpected mismatch. Do not infer a guarantee from the label.
Can this worksheet verify a contractor’s silica compliance?
No. The employer and appropriate professionals determine applicable requirements and controls. This sheet identifies purchasing questions and responsibilities.
