Save the evidence before the old appliance leaves
For a Sacramento-area induction purchase, identify the electric utility first. A city name does not establish SMUD customer eligibility. Its residential induction application requires active SMUD residential service and qualifying equipment installed in an existing, occupied residence. Keep account information private when organizing your buying notes.
SMUD's appliance page distinguishes electric-to-induction from gas-to-induction replacements. For the gas route it requires photographs of the original gas appliance in place and the installed induction replacement. Capture the original condition before removal; a picture of an empty opening does not document the requested appliance.
Compare the installed project, then the possible rebate
The appliance page excludes portable units and sets a purchase-to-application deadline of 180 days. Confirm the exact model and current eligibility with SMUD before relying on a payment. For a nominal 24-inch candidate, request clarification: the webpage says 24 inches or larger, while the application table uses a greater-than-24-inch label.
Obtain a complete price for the appliance and identified electrical, cabinet, countertop and installation work. Then show the potential rebate on a separate line. The application terms make funding and the offering when received relevant; an advertised amount is not a paid rebate or an immediate checkout discount.
Keep electrical-circuit incentives separate. SMUD's Go Electric requirements attach qualifying circuit work to a gas-furnace or gas-water-heater heat-pump conversion and participating-contractor submission. Do not add a circuit rebate merely because the induction range needs wiring. Have the contractor and program confirm the actual scope; this guide does not recommend adding another project to qualify.
Use the Sacramento remodel-scope worksheet to identify related work. The property's building authority and the electric utility are separate checks.
Your decision worksheet
| Check | Record before ordering |
|---|---|
| Customer | Utility at installation address and current program eligibility; keep account details private. |
| Old unit | Existing fuel, model if known, and the required in-place photo before removal. |
| New unit | Exact model, supported installation scope and any size-boundary question. |
| Evidence | Receipt, installation record, required after-photo and application deadline. |
| Budget | Full payable project cost; potential appliance and circuit incentives listed separately. |
A worked buying example
Hypothetical example: a SMUD customer replacing a gas range is quoted an induction appliance and a new circuit. Before removal, the buyer preserves the required gas-appliance photograph. No qualifying heat-pump conversion is planned, so the circuit incentive stays out of the budget. The buyer retains the complete project price and tracks the appliance application separately.
Questions to settle before ordering
Does buying in Sacramento establish eligibility?
No. Confirm the utility, installation address, customer status, equipment and current program terms.
Should I reduce the amount needed to pay the installer?
Only if the actual agreement establishes that arrangement. A possible later program payment does not change the amount presently due.
