You like your countertops. It is the cabinets underneath them that need to change. Before treating countertop reuse as a saving in your cabinet quote, turn that hope into a clearly assessed project option.
For Caesarstone quartz, the manufacturer’s published technical manual discusses product reuse as possible. That does not establish that your countertop can be removed, supported, altered or reinstalled successfully, or that another material has the same characteristics. Your material, existing installation and proposed cabinet plan need their own professional assessment.
Already have a cabinet quote? Request a free initial kitchen-design review and tell us that keeping the countertops is a priority. Ask to compare a clearly defined cabinet plan—not just two bottom-line prices.
First, separate the look you want from the work it requires
Write down what you actually want to improve: worn finishes, hard-to-reach storage, drawer organization, appliance fit or the room’s arrangement. Then identify which cabinets you intend to replace. Updating upper cabinets is a different scope from replacing the base cabinets associated with an existing countertop.
If your priority is primarily appearance, ask whether retaining the existing cabinet boxes deserves evaluation alongside replacement. Do not assume that refinishing, refacing or adding organizers can solve damaged cabinetry or an unsuitable layout. The purpose is to compare viable approaches before making a purchase—not to force the project into the smallest initial quote.
Get the countertop and cabinet professionals into the same conversation
Ask the countertop fabricator and cabinet installer to review the same proposed plan. Request answers about the existing surface, its condition, current supports, seams, sink and cooktop openings, backsplash connections and access for the work.
Be specific about proposed changes. A different sink, cabinet depth, island shape or appliance arrangement belongs in this discussion, even if the new kitchen will look broadly similar. Ask whether the existing pieces can accommodate those changes and what remains uncertain until further inspection.
Photos and approximate dimensions can help start the conversation; they are not final installation approval. For example, Cambria’s countertop planning guidance distinguishes preliminary homeowner measurements from the official measurement performed by a professional. Have your own providers explain their required verification process.
Do not attempt to lift, cut or temporarily support a countertop yourself to test the idea.
Have the appropriate professionals confirm any permit, building-management and installation requirements for the actual property and local authority before work is scheduled.
Copy this two-option scope worksheet
Use one dated cabinet plan for both options. Ask each provider to identify changes instead of silently substituting a different cabinet package.
Option A: Replace the agreed cabinets and attempt to retain the existing countertops, subject to professional assessment.
Option B: Replace the same agreed cabinets and supply new countertops.
For each option, record these six lines:
- Cabinet package: cabinet sizes and quantities, door style, finish, drawer configuration, exposed panels, fillers, trim and included storage accessories. Identify anything that differs between A and B.
- Countertop work: assessment, removal where required, handling, storage if needed, modifications, fabrication, installation and disposal. Mark each task included, excluded or awaiting confirmation.
- Connected work: sink and faucet work, plumbing disconnection and reconnection, appliance coordination, backsplash work, wall repairs and protection of retained finishes. Name the person responsible for each task.
- Complete price: products, labor, delivery, taxes and applicable membership or project fees. Show allowances separately. A blank line is an unanswered question, not a zero-dollar item.
- Uncertainty and fallback: what happens if the existing countertop cannot be retained, who is responsible for handling damage and additional work under the written proposal, who prices the alternative, which work would pause and how you would approve a change.
- Release conditions: which measurements, selections and professional reviews must be completed before the cabinet order or installation schedule is confirmed.
Keep the written answers beside the estimate. Our complete cabinet quote comparison guide covers the product details to match; the worksheet above adds the specific consequences of trying to keep an existing surface.
Do not count an unpriced assumption as a saving
If Option A excludes countertop handling or assumes successful reuse without addressing a fallback, it is not yet a complete alternative to Option B. Ask for the missing information before subtracting one total from the other.
You do not need a fictional “average reuse cost” to make progress. You need a site-specific scope, the quoted cost of the planned work and a clear explanation of the remaining uncertainty. If a provider cannot price something yet, record what they need to inspect or decide first.
For new surfaces, use our countertop quote comparison guide to check material selection, fabrication, removal and installation scope.
Bring a useful brief—not just a countertop photograph
Prepare an overall room photo, views of the cabinet runs, the sink and cooktop areas, and any visible condition concerns. Include a preliminary sketch, existing material information if known, the cabinet quote and a short list of changes you will not compromise on. Photograph only safely accessible areas; no disassembly is needed for a first conversation.
HIBC provides online buying support and can discuss independent showroom design options. Design scope, designer availability and any appointment must be confirmed separately. Installation and construction are arranged with independent professionals. An initial review does not certify countertop reuse or replace on-site assessment.
Before you approve the cabinet order, request your free initial kitchen-design review and ask about comparing your quote. Tell us your city or ZIP code, which cabinets you want to replace and whether countertop reuse has been professionally assessed. Start with a clearer plan for the kitchen you actually have.
Gold membership is a separate purchase: $4,995 includes Year 1. From Year 2, optional $495 annual renewal is purchased separately, with no automatic charge. Products and separately arranged services have their own costs. The initial membership fee is fully refundable within 30 days if you are dissatisfied and have placed no orders. Review the current membership offer and membership terms before deciding.
