Kitchen buying decisions · Los Angeles area
Compare kitchen cabinet quotes without losing the scope
Start with the drawings and item list, not the largest number on the quote. A product package, a delivered cabinet order and an installed kitchen describe different purchases. This worksheet helps you find the differences before a price comparison hides them.
Your decision: Are these two prices actually for the same kitchen?

Add the California contract details to your comparison
A kitchen quote in the Los Angeles area may combine a product purchase with home improvement work, or separate them among several providers. Record the seller or contractor responsible for each agreement. For contracted home improvements, California's Contractors State License Board (CSLB) calls for detailed products and work, a written payment schedule, responsibility for necessary permits, and written treatment of changes. Read CSLB's home improvement contract guidance.
Use those categories to ask each provider the same four questions: What am I buying? Who performs each service? What event makes each payment due? How are changes priced and accepted? Keep a separate cabinet purchase and a contractor's work schedule visible rather than assuming one agreement answers for the other.
For a property inside the City of Los Angeles, the Department of Building and Safety provides plan-review and permit guidance. Identify who will check the actual scope, prepare any required documents, obtain necessary permits and pay the fees. Ask whether those items are included in each quote. The city describes different review paths depending on the project; a provider's short description of “cabinet work” does not resolve your particular scope. For another city or an unincorporated area, use the authority responsible for that address.
Make one reference package
Give both options the same drawing revision, cabinet schedule and appliance list. Keep the original documents; write the revision and date on your comparison. A rendering shows appearance, while the item schedule and written inclusions identify what someone is offering to supply. If one quote uses a different layout, compare that design choice separately before calling its price a saving.
Match widths, quantities, finished ends, appliance panels, fillers, moldings, accessories and hardware. Ask each provider to identify substitutions rather than treating an unfamiliar description as equivalent. Mark a missing line as unknown; a blank amount is not a zero-cost item.
- Record the same layout revision on both written quotes.
- Separate a specification difference from a missing cost.
- Keep allowances and optional upgrades visible instead of adding them to the base package silently.
Put the handoffs beside the products
Make a second list for measurement, removal, installation, delivery, tax and the trades that the project actually needs. Decide whether each is included, separately priced, outside both options or still unresolved. If a package already includes an item, do not enter its amount again. A lower product subtotal can coexist with a higher complete project total.
For example, Quote A might include cabinet delivery but exclude removal and installation, while Quote B bundles all three. First record those inclusions. Then ask for the missing service amounts or compare the product-only portions separately. Do not subtract the original totals and label the difference a saving.
Use four status labels beside every line: included, separately priced, excluded or not yet confirmed. Write the supporting quote page or email date beside it. A fee already inside the base price belongs in the record, but must not be added again.
Compare amounts only after scope matches
Resolve the scope differences before entering figures from your written quotes in Kitchen Quote Check. Include any separately chosen membership cost and other charges that apply to your option. Keep unknown costs open and check for double-counting. A result calculated from your inputs is a comparison, not an HIBC price offer or a guarantee.
If a provider revises a price, preserve the prior version and record what changed: a product, quantity, service, allowance or term. Ask for an updated total tied to the same drawing revision, so that a later change does not erase your original comparison.
Keep payment timing separate from the project total
Two offers can have similar totals and different payment schedules. Create a short record for each agreement: payee, amount, due event, work or material covered, and remaining balance. Ask about missing terms before signing or paying. Use the applicable terms for the specific agreement; a cabinet merchandise order and a home improvement contract should not be blended into one assumed schedule.
CSLB's homeowner checklist includes contractor-license checks, permit fees, payment schedules and written changes. Review its current guidance with the actual provider when checking a California home improvement contract.
Keep allowances identifiable. Ask what an allowance covers, what remains undecided and how the final amount will be reconciled. If the layout, materials or work changes, request the corresponding written price and schedule revision. A verbal upgrade promise should not be the only record in your comparison.
Two-quote scope match
For each row, mark whether the written options match. Take the unresolved questions to both providers; the checklist does not supply prices.
Print this list or copy the questions into your own private planning notes. No completed worksheet or consultation is required to request a review or explore membership.
