Find the work hidden inside “replace the cabinets”
A Wichita kitchen can keep the same general arrangement and still need more than new cabinet boxes. A deeper sink, a different appliance or a newly exposed wall may change someone else's work. The useful question is not whether the room looks similar. It is which parts of the existing kitchen the proposed purchase relies on, and who has checked them.
Request a free initial kitchen review with photos and your proposed cabinet list. You can begin with the information you have; the checklist below helps make later quotes easier to compare.
Mark what the replacement assumes will stay
Give each cabinet a location on a simple drawing. Beside the drawing, list the items expected to remain: sink position, drain connection, range type, refrigerator opening, outlets, flooring and walls. Then ask the installer to identify which assumptions need a site check. A replacement order should not depend on an unverified photograph measurement or on the old cabinet having been installed correctly.
For each retained appliance, keep the model number and installation information with the cabinet schedule. If the appliance is changing, label the selection unresolved until the actual model is chosen. An allowance for an appliance is not the same as a confirmed opening for it.
Use the local finish-work distinction carefully
The Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department's permit guidance lists repair or replacement of existing cabinets, countertops and similar finishes among work that can be done without a permit. It distinguishes that from new construction and changes requiring a permit. Describe the whole proposed project to the responsible authority; a cabinet replacement line does not settle the requirements for added wiring, moved services or structural work.
Confirm that MABCD is the authority for the property. A Wichita-area mailing description is not enough to establish jurisdiction. If you plan to do permitted work yourself, the same guidance sets owner-occupancy and trade-exam or licensed-subcontractor conditions. Ask about your actual eligibility before assigning yourself that work.
Keep an exception list beside the cabinet quote
Start with the proposed replacement, then record every departure from the current room. This gives your installer a short list to investigate and stops an unresolved item from disappearing into a low product subtotal.
| Proposed choice | Question to resolve | Keep with the answer |
|---|---|---|
| Different sink or sink base | Will the bowl, disposal, accessories and connections fit together? | Exact models and the plumber's and installer's scope |
| New appliance configuration | Do the opening, service and installation requirements change? | Model instructions and the affected quote lines |
| Cabinet run meets existing flooring | What becomes exposed, and who handles any agreed repair? | Site observation, finish selection and allowance |
| Wall condition is uncertain | Who investigates and specifies preparation before installation? | Findings and an updated work proposal |
| Proposed utility or wall change | Which professional and authority must review the complete scope? | Applicable approvals and the current drawing |
Test a product change before accepting the revised total
Suppose you choose a deeper sink after receiving a cabinet quote. Ask the cabinet supplier whether the selected base and interior accessories still fit. Ask the countertop provider whether the sink selection changes its work. Ask the plumber to assess the actual connections. The answer may be straightforward, but it should come from the people responsible for those items.
Record a confirmed inclusion, a separately priced change or an unresolved question for each affected line. Do not enter zero because someone has not priced the work. Keep any product substitution visible, including a change to a filler, panel or adjacent cabinet needed to make the package work.
Release the order against a resolved scope
Before approving the cabinet schedule, agree on who verifies final dimensions and which drawing the order uses. Keep product purchase, demolition, installation, countertop work, connections and site repairs separate enough to see their responsibilities. Ask for the supplier's actual order-change conditions before approving custom or nonreturnable selections.
Use the Wichita kitchen planning hub for the broader starting brief. This exception list is the next step: it makes a replacement quote specific enough for the people measuring, supplying and installing the kitchen to work from the same assumptions.
