Kitchen layout decisions · Virginia Beach
Settle the openings before locking the cabinet run
Moving a kitchen doorway or changing a window can create more room for cabinetry, but it also changes the room that the cabinet order must fit. For a Virginia Beach project, compare the retained-opening layout with the proposed alteration before treating either as a final product schedule. Keep the structural and exit questions with the professionals responsible for them.
Request a free initial kitchen review with photos and a sketch showing the current and proposed openings. A useful first result is a clearer comparison of what each layout requires.
Record the whole opening, not just a width
Mark windows, doors, passages and adjoining rooms on the existing plan. Photograph each opening from both sides where accessible. Note trim, door swing, nearby switches and the relationship to appliances. Label homeowner measurements as preliminary until the responsible measurement professional verifies them.
On a separate proposed plan, show which openings stay, move or change size. Identify the reason for each change: a longer cabinet run, a different appliance location or improved circulation. This lets the team test whether the desired function needs that alteration or could be achieved with a different cabinet arrangement.
Have the actual alteration assessed
Virginia Beach's residential building-permit guidance includes cutting away walls or partitions, cutting or removing structural beams, and changes affecting required means of egress among work requiring permits. Its alteration list also includes replacement windows or exterior doors when frames or jambs are altered.
Have the project professional identify the applicable structural, exit and permit requirements for the proposed work. An opening that appears to be inconvenient is not automatically available to remove. This City of Virginia Beach guidance does not determine requirements for a home in Norfolk, Chesapeake or another jurisdiction.
Compare the two layouts at the same level of detail
| Decision | Retained-opening option | Altered-opening option |
|---|---|---|
| Cabinet run | Fits the verified existing conditions | Fits the proposed conditions after professional review |
| Door and appliance movement | Check swings and operating space together | Recheck them against the changed route |
| Wall and finish work | Identify local preparation and repairs | Identify the full alteration and making-good scope |
| Services near the opening | Confirm retained positions | Price any agreed relocation separately |
| Approvals and inspections | Confirm requirements for the actual work | Assign the applicant and project-specific sequence |
Walk through how the cabinets will be used
On the drawing, trace a person carrying groceries into the kitchen, someone opening the dishwasher and another person reaching a drawer. Ask the designer and installer to review the appliance instructions and operating clearances. The objective is to identify conflicts before ordering, not to assign a generic clearance number to an unverified room.
For example, a longer cabinet run may create storage but place a drawer beside a door swing. Ask whether a different cabinet configuration solves the problem without changing the opening. If an alteration remains the preferred option, bring the confirmed finished dimensions back into the cabinet drawing; the proposed rough opening and the usable finished space are different measurements.
Tie the order to the accepted finished conditions
Identify which dimensions can be verified now and which depend on construction. Ask the cabinet supplier and installer how those unresolved measurements affect order release. Do not assume that a promised cabinet delivery makes the altered space ready to receive the products.
The City's guidance assigns inspection scheduling to the permit holder and notes that its general inspection list does not cover every situation. Have the permit holder and contractor establish the actual sequence, including any point when work must remain visible. Coordinate cabinet installation with that sequence through the responsible providers.
Include alteration work, site repairs, delivery, installation, applicable taxes and membership in the comparison alongside cabinet products. Keep open costs and decisions explicit. The Virginia Beach kitchen planning hub provides the wider project brief; this opening-by-opening comparison helps turn it into a cabinet layout that the team can verify.
