Two Toledo cabinet installation quotes can describe different jobs. One may cover setting cabinets; another may also coordinate removal, trade work and any required applications. Before choosing by the total, compare the quoted business, each work package and the person responsible for unresolved requirements. That comparison helps you decide whether the cabinet order is ready or still depends on missing scope.
Use this worksheet alongside the broader Toledo kitchen planning guide. Keep a separate column for each proposal and request written answers to the same questions.
Match the business to the work
Start with your actual property jurisdiction. A Toledo-area mailing address or service description does not establish the authority for a nearby city, village or township. Confirm the responsible department before applying City of Toledo guidance.
For work within the city, Toledo’s homeowner remodeling resource directs residents to city contractor licensing guidance. Its registered-contractor directory separates home remodeling, plumbing, electrical and other categories.
Open the category relevant to the proposed task. Compare the listed company name and identifier with the written quote, and save the page date and your check date privately. Ask the city to resolve an uncertain name match or credential scope. A listed remodeling business does not, by itself, answer who will perform a plumbing or electrical task. Verify any named subcontractor separately; do not treat a directory listing as proof of insurance, availability or workmanship.
Compare the missing responsibilities
For each row, mark included, excluded or unresolved for both proposals. Add a named owner and supporting document. “Included” should describe an actual task; “we handle it” leaves too much open.
| Decision | Evidence to request from each bidder |
|---|---|
| Who is quoting? | Exact contracting business, contact and applicable credential reference; explain any different trading name. |
| Who measures and approves fit? | Named person, drawing revision and responsibility for checking appliance and cabinet specifications. |
| What does installation include? | Removal, disposal, setting, leveling, fillers, finished panels, trim and wall repairs, with exclusions identified. |
| Who handles each trade? | Named provider and scope for affected plumbing, electrical or other work; identify separate quotes still needed. |
| Who handles required approvals? | Person confirming requirements, applicable applicant, fees, inspection requests and the record confirming completion. |
| What changes the price? | Unresolved conditions, allowances, change authorization and how an added task will be priced. |
Keep unresolved costs visible instead of treating them as zero. A lower installation total is useful only after you understand the work it leaves for someone else.
Assign application tasks without assuming authority
Toledo’s permit portal guidance provides instructions for online payments, inspection scheduling and looking up previously issued permits by address. Those tools help organize evidence; a prior permit does not establish approval for your new work.
Have the responsible professional confirm which permits and inspections, if any, apply to the actual scope and who may apply. Record who submits, answers review questions, checks issuance and arranges each required inspection. Naming someone on your worksheet does not make them an authorized applicant. Keep application identifiers in your private project file, separate from a supplier’s cabinet order confirmation.
Worked example: installation stops before reconnection
Suppose both quotes use the same cabinet list. Proposal A includes cabinet setting and fillers but excludes disconnecting and reconnecting the sink and dishwasher. Proposal B names a plumbing subcontractor and includes a defined reconnection scope. Neither explanation alone establishes which proposal is better.
Ask A for the missing trade quote and B for the exact subcontractor and exclusions. Have the appropriate professional confirm requirements for the proposed work. Then check that both prices use the same sink, dishwasher and drawing revision. If a new sink changes the cabinet opening or service arrangement, resolve that question before approving the affected cabinet specification.
Choose on the reconciled scope and total cost. Before committing, retain the accepted cabinet list, installation responsibilities, remaining exclusions and named owners for required approvals. Keep supplier order terms and installer responsibilities as separate written records.
