Start with the scraps, not the appliance
Replacing kitchen cabinets does not automatically settle whether to buy another disposal. First record what your household removes during preparation and cleanup, where it goes now, and which task a disposal would actually serve.
Spokane's optional food and yard waste service accepts listed food scraps in its green cart. Service terms and collection frequency matter: the current page describes weekly March–November collection and monthly winter pickups. Confirm your address, existing service, accepted materials and current schedule before designing around that route. Spokane Valley and other providers have separate arrangements.
Compare two jobs that can coexist
A countertop collection bowl or caddy moves accepted scraps toward a confirmed destination. A disposal has its own model-specific operating limits and installation needs. You may retain both; neither justifies sending every leftover down the sink. The City's household cleanup advice suggests a nearby bowl for scraps and says grease should stay out of drains.
For several ordinary meals, note what still needs handling after collecting accepted scraps. Then ask a qualified installer to compare retaining the existing unit, fitting a replacement, or completing the sink without one. Have the professional assess connections and any affected work; this is not a removal instruction or permit exemption. Use the Spokane appliance and permit checklist when the scope changes.
Your cleanup decision sheet
| Check | Your record |
|---|---|
| Scrap route | Provider, address eligibility, accepted materials, current service and collection schedule. |
| Daily task | Scraps collected separately; remaining cleanup job for a disposal, if any. |
| Handoff | Who empties the caddy, destination and routine between collections. |
| Final scope | Retain, replace or omit; installer assessment, itemized work and final sink configuration. |
A worked buying example
Hypothetical example: a Spokane homeowner initially includes a new disposal with replacement cabinets. After checking the existing green-cart service and recording cleanup tasks, the household finds no defined job for a replacement. It asks the installer to assess a sink configuration without one before changing the order. That assessment, not the worksheet alone, determines the final scope.
Questions to settle before ordering
Must I choose between a caddy and a disposal?
No. They can coexist. Define each job and follow the collection provider’s acceptance rules and the disposal’s instructions.
Does this assume free collection or approve removal?
No. Confirm service terms separately. A qualified professional must assess the proposed installation work and applicable requirements.
