Check the evidence behind a layout before ordering around it
An old drawing may show an opening where your kitchen now has a wall. A proposed pantry may rely on that opening being usable again. Before approving cabinets around either assumption, compare three things: what the available record describes, what is visible today, and the work you want to undertake. The useful outcome is a specific question with an owner and a product decision attached.
Use Provo's resources to frame the question
The City of Provo Building page provides a map of current and past building permits and residential remodel resources, including a remodel checklist. These are starting points for finding relevant information and asking the Building Division which documents apply to your proposed scope.
Confirm that the property is within Provo's jurisdiction. Orem and Lehi have their own processes. A map entry alone does not establish final inspection acceptance or approval for a new layout. An unsuccessful search does not establish that past work was unlawful. Ask the department to clarify an uncertain record before drawing a conclusion about it.
Make a three-layer comparison
Choose one feature at a time, such as a former doorway or the wall beside the refrigerator. Label photographs and sketches consistently so the designer and installer can follow the same question.
| Evidence layer | What to record and how to use it |
|---|---|
| Past record | Document title, date, relevant sheet and the work it actually describes. Note any stated status exactly. Identify missing pages or unclear descriptions for the department to explain. |
| Kitchen today | Visible wall and opening locations, retained appliances and approximate dimensions. Distinguish an observation from a guess about concealed framing or services. Qualified professionals confirm actual conditions. |
| Proposed work | Mark the intended change and the cabinet, panel or appliance dimension that depends on it. Name who resolves feasibility, required approvals and final measurements before that item is ordered. |
Keep private record references in your project folder. For an initial buying conversation, share the relevant question and layout excerpt; omit unrelated names, signatures and account details. A useful brief can say “opening width needs professional confirmation” without circulating an entire property file.
Worked example: an old opening and a new pantry
Suppose an earlier drawing shows a doorway beside the kitchen, the current room has a finished wall there, and your proposed pantry arrangement would use a reopened passage. The old drawing helps locate the question. It does not establish how the wall was later built or what reopening it would require now.
Put the drawing reference in the first row, a current photograph in the second, and the proposed passage and pantry position in the third. Ask the qualified project professional to assess the existing condition and proposed work, with the department confirming any required approval route. Keep the affected pantry width, finished panels and order dimensions unresolved until the relevant answers are available.
Meanwhile, request a separate option that retains the current wall. Ask the supplier to identify which product quantities or prices depend on the opening; ask the installer to identify the corresponding construction scope. This gives you two understandable options without treating the cheaper cabinet total as the complete cost of changing the room.
Turn each unknown into one decision
Record the question, who will answer it, the evidence received and the affected order item. Once resolved, have the designer and installer reconcile that answer with the final product schedule. If it remains open, keep the dependent choice open too. You can still discuss finishes, storage priorities and the rest of the project in a free initial review.
Bring the decisions to a free review
