Kitchen design inspiration: white cabinetry and a warm wood island

Portland Kitchen Budget Worksheet: Compare the Whole Remodel

September 06, 20263 min read

A beautiful kitchen starts with choices. A confident purchase starts with knowing what those choices cost together. Before committing to cabinets for your Portland-area home, use this worksheet to separate product pricing from the other parts of your remodel. Then explore whether confidential member pricing through Home Improvement Buying Club improves the complete buying decision.

Request your free initial kitchen review. Tell us your project ZIP code, preferred timing and whether you have an existing proposal.

Build your budget from written proposals

Do not start by assigning your kitchen an internet average. Start with your scope and the providers who will price it. For each line below, record the amount, the provider, whether it is fixed or an allowance, and what is excluded. Leave unknown amounts visibly unresolved instead of entering zero.

Budget line What to capture
Cabinets Cabinet schedule, selected finish, panels and trim
Storage and hardware Pullouts, organizers, handles and other accessories
Countertops Surface selection, fabrication, edges and cutouts
Delivery Freight, unloading arrangements and any storage
Site preparation Removal, disposal and preparation described in the scope
Installation The installer’s written work and exclusions
Other trades Separately priced plumbing, electrical or other work
Appliances and fixtures The actual selections used for design coordination
Project charges Applicable taxes, fees and permits confirmed for the project
Membership The HIBC fee applicable to your membership decision
Project reserve An amount you choose for unresolved conditions and changes

Ask for two design scenarios

If you are undecided about the layout, ask the responsible professionals to distinguish a cabinet-focused update from a broader layout change. Keep the same finish and storage priorities where practical so you can see what the scope change contributes. Do not assume that moving a fixture or modifying a wall is included in the cabinet proposal. Have the appropriate professionals explain feasibility, responsibilities and required approvals for the property.

Portland, Beaverton, Hillsboro, Lake Oswego and Vancouver projects should be priced around their actual addresses and scope. Confirm which authority handles your property rather than applying one city’s requirements across the whole region. This worksheet is a way to organize questions, not a local permit determination or a construction estimate.

Compare three totals—not one attractive number

Product total: cabinets, accessories and other selected products.

Known complete total: product total plus quoted delivery, applicable charges, membership and independently contracted services. Keep the same scope on both sides of your comparison.

Planning total: known complete total plus your chosen reserve and explicitly identified unresolved allowances. Revisit it when selections or scope change.

The difference between proposals is meaningful only when you understand what each includes. If one uses a different cabinet manufacturer, record the construction, finish and service differences. You can prefer an alternative without pretending the products are identical.

Put membership into the calculation

HIBC adds no product markup. Independent showroom partners provide design and pricing, and HIBC supports members with product and supplier coordination. Gold is $4,995 for the first year, then $495 annually beginning Year 2. Include the initial fee in a first-year buying comparison; do not subtract a product-price difference and call the result final savings before counting relevant costs.

Gold’s initial membership fee is fully refundable within 30 days if you are dissatisfied and have placed no orders. Use that evaluation period to review the fit before committing to products. Product purchases and separately contracted services have their own terms.
