A license number is the start of the comparison
For a Knoxville cabinet project, record the exact business that will contract with you, its proposed role and the work it is pricing. Then check the applicable Tennessee license category and any monetary limit. A business tax license, a contractor credential and a building permit answer different questions.
Compare the provider's legal name and current license record with the written proposal. Ask the Tennessee Board for Licensing Contractors to resolve a mismatch or uncertain classification. The homeowner's comparison sheet does not approve a license, establish an exemption or certify the provider's workmanship.
Use the actual residential-remodeling category
The Board's current Home Improvement Contractor page identifies residential remodeling projects from $3,000 to $24,999 in adopting counties, including Knox. Its separate Contractor page describes the $25,000-or-more requirement for prime contractors and specified other roles, before contracting activities that include bidding or negotiating a price.
Do not turn those summaries into a homeowner ruling about a particular installer. Give the Board the actual scope, project value and contracting arrangement when the category is unclear. Someone contracting directly with the owner has a different role from someone subcontracting to another contractor; a casual job title is not enough.
Keep project value separate from the labor subtotal
The Contractor page defines a monetary limit by the total dollar amount of an individual project or contract and warns against splitting work into phases to circumvent it. Request the value basis used by the provider and compare it with the relevant license record. Do not treat an apparently smaller labor invoice as the entire answer.
If you purchase cabinets or other materials separately, list them visibly and ask the Board or qualified adviser how they affect the actual arrangement. This guide does not decide their legal treatment. Do not split agreements to avoid requirements or assume a general monetary tolerance applies to every license type.
Recheck the question when the accepted scope grows. A larger cabinet package, added construction or a provider change can make an earlier comparison incomplete. Local permits and separate trade credentials still require their own checks. Confirm the property jurisdiction: Knoxville, unincorporated Knox County and another nearby county do not share every administrative requirement.
Keep the result with the Knoxville hinge specification record so the work proposal and products refer to the same version.
Your decision worksheet

|---|---|
| Name | Exact contracting name, license identifier and dated official verification. |
| Role | Direct-to-owner contractor or subcontractor; actual work described. |

A worked quote comparison
Hypothetical example: a Knox County homeowner first requests a limited cabinet installation, then adds related remodeling work. Before accepting the expanded proposal, the buyer asks the business to document the new scope and value and checks the applicable license question. The original small-job description is not reused as evidence for the larger agreement.
Questions to settle before ordering
Does a current contractor license guarantee a good installation?
No. Verify the applicable credential and also evaluate the actual written scope, references and project responsibilities.
Can I use a labor-only price to decide the required license?
Do not assume that is sufficient. Present the complete arrangement, including separately purchased materials, to the Board when the value basis is unclear.
