Ask what the stainless quote actually buys
For a Greenville kitchen considering stainless steel, put two documents beside the finish sample: a plan of the complete top and a section showing how it is built. A photograph of a substantial front edge does not tell you the metal thickness, what supports it underneath or what reaches your home as one finished piece.
Identify the actual fabricator and proposed assembly. Ask whether the offer supplies a completed countertop, a metal covering that needs other work, or separate components that another provider must assemble. Keep a parts-only price separate from a completed installation proposal.
Separate metal thickness from the visible edge
Brooks Custom's construction description lists metal gauges separately from edge thickness and describes bonded or reinforced underside options with sound treatment. It is one fabricator's approach. Ask your provider to identify its own metal, backing and support arrangement without transferring those details to an unrelated quote.
Have the section label the actual metal thickness or gauge, the total finished height and the material below the metal. Then show where the assembly meets the cabinet top, exposed ends and selected appliances. A deep-looking front edge should not stand in for those separate measurements and components.
Franke's Swiss worktop range distinguishes different metal-thickness products and describes solid worktops placed on a substructure. This illustrates another construction approach; it establishes no South Carolina availability or HIBC supplier relationship. Compare the actual offered assembly, not the apparent thickness in a photograph of another system.
Review the underside before judging sound or feel
Ask for a section sample or an explanation of the underside materials included in each proposal. Identify any bonded core, reinforcement and sound treatment, along with the party supplying it. Have the cabinet installer and fabricator confirm how the proposed assembly is supported and secured for the actual run.
If a representative sample is available, compare ordinary contact with a light, empty utensil only as the provider permits. Record the sample's construction. A loose metal offcut and a supported display are different demonstrations; neither guarantees the sound of the completed room. Do not perform impact, load or heat tests yourself.
Ask whether the underside changes usable clearances above drawers or appliances. Have the responsible professionals check the actual section rather than treating a countertop thickness label as the complete cabinet interface. Keep any additional support or preparation work visible in the quote.
Mark what is welded in the shop and joined at home
Brooks describes welded fabrication while also noting field joints for some large or shaped tops. Ask your fabricator to mark each delivered piece and every site connection on the drawing. A description such as seamless should prompt that drawing review, not an assumption that a long installed run contains no join.
Request the expected appearance and the maintenance instructions for each actual connection. Have the delivery provider confirm the route for the proposed pieces before their configuration is accepted. If access forces a different division, review the revised joint and complete price before fabrication proceeds.
If an integral bowl, upstand or other formed feature is included, locate it on the same fabrication drawing. Confirm who supplies the fittings and completes the connections. These features are fixed parts of the proposed assembly; a finished worktop should not arrive while its faucet position or selected bowl remains an informal preference.
Approve the assembly and its separate responsibilities
Request a complete offer covering measurement, drawings, fabrication, underside components, delivery, installation and any separately arranged trade work. Ask the providers to identify removal, service access and later repair responsibilities. Keep finish care and actual warranty terms with the order; this guide makes no stain-proof, scratch-proof, noise or lifetime-performance promise.
For work within the City of Greenville, the Building & Permit Center provides the city's permit-question and application routes. Have professionals confirm the actual property jurisdiction and any affected plumbing or other work. Greer, Anderson and county properties require their own jurisdiction check; the regional market name is not a project approval.
Bring the assembly drawing and clarified offers into your Greenville kitchen plan. If measurement or drawing services are priced separately, use the design and measurement fee checklist to identify who supplies them. Choose after the quoted construction, delivered pieces and installed scope describe the same countertop.
Your decision worksheet
| Check | Record before ordering |
|---|---|
| Metal | Quoted material and actual sheet/plate thickness or gauge, separately from edge height. |
| Build | Section showing backing, reinforcement, sound treatment and cabinet interface. |
| Sample | Exact finish and sample construction; record what any permitted comparison demonstrates. |
| Pieces | Delivered sections, route review, shop welds and each proposed site joint. |
| Parts | Fixed bowl, upstand and fitting positions shown on the accepted fabrication drawing. |
| Owners | Complete fabrication/installation scope, separate trade work, care and service contacts. |
A worked buying example
Hypothetical example: two Greenville offers show the same-looking front edge. One includes a specified bonded underside while the other leaves backing to the cabinet installer. A long section also needs a site joint because of the proposed delivery route. The buyer asks for complete section and piece drawings, then compares the clarified installed offers. The decision is based on the actual assembly and responsibilities, not an assumed metal thickness or invisible join.
Questions to settle before ordering
Does a thicker-looking edge mean the countertop uses thicker steel?
The visible edge and the metal thickness are separate specifications. Ask for a section identifying both, plus the underside assembly, before comparing the offers.
Does seamless fabrication guarantee no joint at my home?
No. Have the fabricator identify the actual delivered pieces and any site connection. Review the expected finish and maintenance of that detail instead of relying on the general description.
