Keeping a kitchen inside its current room and enlarging that room can produce very different cabinet orders. Before choosing between them, ask each layout to solve the same problem: more usable pantry space, easier cleanup or a better place to prepare food. Then compare the work and unresolved decisions behind each proposal.
This worksheet helps Fresno homeowners decide which option is defined well enough for pricing and which products still depend on a construction decision. Use the Fresno kitchen planning guide for broader cabinet and countertop coordination.
Separate finish work from the complete project
Fresno’s Single Family Homes guidance lists cabinets, countertops and similar finish work among building-permit exceptions. The same resource says additions and significant alterations require planning approval and building permits, with plot plans and the Single Family Zone Clearance checklist for both processes.
Those statements concern different scopes. Describe the entire proposal, including wall, utility and exterior-opening changes, when asking the city and your qualified project professional which requirements apply. The cabinet component alone does not settle the larger project’s review. This guidance concerns single-family property within the City of Fresno; confirm the authority for a county or neighboring-city address.
Put two complete options on the same sheet
Label the drawings A and B, with a revision and date. “Keep the room” should mean a defined boundary, not an assumption that every existing service will work with the new products. Fill in the following comparisons before choosing a cabinet package.
| Decision | A: existing room | B: expanded room |
|---|---|---|
| Desired improvement | Name the storage or working-space problem the layout solves. | Show what the extra space adds beyond option A. |
| Construction boundary | List retained walls, openings and services; identify any changes. | Mark the addition or altered boundary and affected systems. |
| Approval questions | Record who confirms requirements for the complete replacement scope. | Record who resolves planning, building and applicable trade requirements. |
| Cabinet uncertainty | Identify measurements, appliance fit and fillers still needing confirmation. | Identify dimensions that depend on the final construction drawing. |
| Comparable price | Separate products, removal, installation and unresolved allowances. | Include construction and related work alongside the product package. |
For each unanswered item, add an owner, the information needed and the next decision it affects. Keep application references and property documents in your private project file. A question without an owner can otherwise disappear between the designer’s drawing and the installer’s quote.
Identify what can change the cabinet order
- Trace the room boundary. Ask which wall lengths, corners and openings are final. Mark cabinet runs that depend on those answers.
- Attach product specifications. Use the actual refrigerator, range, sink and accessory models. Check both options against the relevant dimensions and installation requirements.
- Separate stable choices from dependent sizes. You can compare a door finish or storage mechanism while the size of the cabinet using it remains provisional.
- Confirm the commitment point. Ask the supplier about change and cancellation terms, and identify who verifies final measurements before an affected item is ordered.
Keep the complete costs visible in both columns: products, construction, delivery, taxes, installation, separately arranged services and membership. Label an allowance as an allowance. An attractive cabinet subtotal does not explain the cost of creating the room around it.
Worked example: pantry storage or a larger kitchen?
Suppose option A reorganizes the current kitchen around a tall pantry. Option B extends an exterior wall to add a longer cabinet run and preparation space. The homeowner has a product quote for A and a sketch for B, but no confirmed construction scope for the extension.
First compare the practical benefit: what will each option store, and where will preparation happen? Next, have the responsible professionals identify B’s review and construction dependencies. Keep its cabinet lengths provisional until the coordinated drawing and final measurements support them. Price the larger room’s construction separately so the two options can be compared on complete scope.
If the extension changes during review, update the affected cabinet run, panels and countertop dimensions together. Before choosing either option, record the selected drawing revision, accepted exclusions, unresolved items and who confirms readiness to order. That written decision keeps an early sketch from becoming an unintended purchase specification.

HIBC provides online buying support and can discuss independent showroom design options. Design scope, designer availability and any appointment must be confirmed separately. Qualified project professionals verify final measurements, construction requirements and installation.
Gold membership is a separate purchase: $4,995 includes Year 1. From Year 2, optional $495 annual renewal is purchased separately, with no automatic charge. Products and separately arranged services have their own costs. The initial membership fee is fully refundable within 30 days if you are dissatisfied and have placed no orders.
