Durham kitchen permits: a cabinet order release worksheet

October 07, 2026

A cabinet quote can look complete while the drawing behind it is still changing. In a Durham kitchen remodel, keep any required building and trade applications, plus the cabinet order, on separate lines of one worksheet. The useful question is: does every person who can change the layout have the same revision, and which decisions remain open?

Use this worksheet with your designer and installer before accepting a final cabinet list. For broader material and quote planning, start with the Durham–Chapel Hill kitchen guide.

Start with the right address and records

Durham’s Applications & Forms guidance directs building and city fire submissions to Dplans, and trade applications to the Land Development Office portal. For work requiring a permit, the guidance says it cannot begin until that permit is issued. The LDO portal also supports fee payments, inspection management and permit tracking for the City and County of Durham.

First confirm the authority for your property. A Durham–Chapel Hill mailing or market label does not establish which department applies. Have your qualified project professional confirm the applications and inspections required for the actual work; this worksheet does not determine permit requirements.

Make one row for each application

Copy the fields below into a private project sheet. Keep separate rows for each required application, even when one contractor coordinates them. If a requirement is unresolved, name the person who will confirm it instead of marking it complete.

Application record fields to complete privately
RecordWhat to write down
Scope and ownerApplication type, work it covers, responsible applicant and contact.
ReferencePortal, application number and exact property address; keep these in your private file.
Current statusStatus as displayed, date checked, outstanding comment and next action owner.
DrawingRevision identifier, date and the sheet showing cabinet, sink and appliance locations.
Next milestoneRequired response or inspection, who requests it and who records the result.

Durham’s public application search accepts a permit number, project name or address. Check the exact matching record. A submitted file, a review comment and an issued permit are different evidence; record what you actually see rather than turning a progress update into “all approved.”

Keep a separate cabinet release checklist

A permit status does not settle every product choice. Before committing to an order, ask the responsible people to resolve these five items against the same drawing:

  1. Measured room: identify who verified final dimensions, wall conditions, openings and the reference points used.
  2. Product fit: attach exact appliance, sink and accessory specifications, including the cabinet sizes and clearances they require.
  3. Complete cabinet list: reconcile each unit with fillers, finished ends, panels, trim and installation allowances.
  4. Open changes: list unresolved construction or review questions and the cabinet dimensions or items each could affect.
  5. Order terms: confirm the supplier’s change and cancellation terms directly, then identify who authorizes the final specification.

Keep stable selections available for pricing while affected items remain clearly provisional. Before placing any partial order, confirm compatibility, delivery arrangements and the cost consequences with the supplier.

Worked example: a sink moves after the first quote

Suppose revision A keeps the sink in place, but revision B moves it beside a window. The homeowner likes the new layout; the cabinet quote still names revision A. The plumbing applicant is reviewing the changed work, and the installer has not checked the new sink-base position.

Record the mismatch on the cabinet checklist. Ask the designer to issue the coordinated layout, the plumbing professional to confirm the applicable application response, and the installer to check fit. Then reconcile the sink base, adjacent drawers, fillers and countertop cutout with the new specifications. Keep the old quote marked superseded when its replacement arrives. An issued record for earlier work does not answer whether the changed scope has been addressed.

Finish with a short written handoff: accepted drawing revision, final product list, remaining exclusions and the named person confirming each item. Save the application evidence separately so everyone can find both the construction record and the purchase decision.
