Name the response you are buying
A sensor under a new kitchen sink and a valve controlling the home's water supply do different jobs. Before adding either to a Cape Coral–Fort Myers project, write the desired response: an audible warning, a phone notification, an automatic shutoff, or a documented combination. Do not treat the word “smart” as confirmation of all four.
Moen's detector setup guidance distinguishes alert settings from connecting a separate Flo Shutoff. Its automatic-shutoff instructions require the detector and shutoff to be linked with that feature enabled. This manufacturer example does not establish HIBC availability or another sensor’s functions.
Map what is sensed and what is controlled
Have the qualified installer identify each proposed sensing location and the supply controlled by any valve. Ask how the plan addresses the sink cabinet, dishwasher area and refrigerator water connection where applicable. Document existing appliance-specific protection separately.
For a Cape Coral property, distinguish domestic water from irrigation when the site has separate services. The City's Collection Distribution page identifies separate water, sewer and irrigation sections. That does not tell you which pipes or valves serve your home. Have the responsible professional identify the actual arrangement; neighboring Fort Myers or unincorporated properties need their own utility and jurisdiction check.
Price the working system, including its dependencies
Moen's Flo installation document identifies continuous power and Wi-Fi requirements for its listed models. Ask about the exact candidate's documented behavior during a network or power interruption, any backup provision, and which notifications depend on outside services. Leave an unanswered function marked unknown.
Request hardware, compatible accessories, plumbing work, electrical work if needed, setup and commissioning as separate scope items. Identify any optional service charge without assuming one is required. Account setup should remain under your control; keep passwords, security details and occupancy routines out of quote worksheets.
Preserve access and verify the agreed response
Show the sensor and service access beside the proposed bins, pullouts and plumbing in the sink cabinet. Ask who maintains batteries or sensors, receives alerts and handles a shutdown when the household needs help. A working alert has limited practical value if nobody knows the response plan.
Before accepting completion, request the installer's manufacturer-supported demonstration of the agreed detection and shutoff functions. Do not create a real leak to test the system. Keep the result with your Cape Coral–Fort Myers kitchen plan. Detection and shutoff cannot guarantee that no water damage will occur.
Your decision worksheet
| Check | Record before ordering |
|---|---|
| Goal | Alert, notification, automatic shutoff or a specific combination. |
| Area | Sensor locations, controlled supply and remaining uncovered questions. |
| Needs | Power, connectivity, backup, accessories and any paid dependency. |
| Access | Cabinet space, maintenance responsibility and household response plan. |
| Proof | Installer’s safe demonstration, recorded result and unresolved functions. |
A worked equipment decision
Hypothetical example: a Cape Coral homeowner expects an under-sink detector to turn off the home's water. The proposal includes only the sensor. The installer identifies the additional valve, compatibility, installation and configuration needed for that response. The buyer can now compare an alert-only option with a complete shutoff proposal instead of treating unlike packages as equivalent.
Questions to settle before ordering
Does a phone alert prove the water shut off?
No. Verify the actual valve and configured response separately through the provider’s supported test and confirmation.
Will a supply shutoff prevent every kind of kitchen water damage?
No. Have the provider explain the system’s detection limits and controlled supply. Keep drainage, existing water and other uncovered risks separate; no device is a damage guarantee.
