An excluded purchase is not an excluded question
When you buy appliances separately, a cabinet proposal can correctly exclude their purchase price while still depending on their specifications. Ask the seller to distinguish the appliance itself from the work of coordinating its cabinet opening, panels, trim and installation interfaces. Do not let one exclusion stand for every related responsibility.
The Bakersfield kitchen planning guide addresses retained appliance fit. This comparison also applies when your independently purchased appliance is new: identify the exact product and who supplies the accepted installation information before the cabinet order relies on it.
Give each provider the same model record
Keep the selected model number, current official installation document and any provider-confirmed accessories together. Ask who checks that record against the cabinet drawing and who reports a mismatch. A verbal description such as standard dishwasher does not name the product on which the proposed work depends.
Use the seller’s specification for the actual cabinet line. KraftMaid provides product-line specification guides; a dimension or option from one line should not silently become an assumption for another. Ask for unresolved appliance inputs to be marked clearly on the quotation.
Compare the work on both sides of the purchase
For a California home-improvement contractor scope, CSLB guidance calls for detailed products and work responsibilities in the written agreement. Use that detail to ask who receives, handles, checks and installs the separately purchased equipment. Retail supply terms and contractor work should each be clear.
If one provider expects another to perform a task, obtain that other provider’s agreement. Compare any quoted coordination, fitting or reconnection work consistently across proposals. A product bought elsewhere does not establish either a free service or an automatic extra charge.
| Check | What to record |
|---|---|
| Purchase | State which appliance is supplied by the homeowner. |
| Identity | Attach the model and current official installation document. |
| Cabinet check | Name the person accepting the cabinet-product interface. |
| Receiving | Assign arrival, condition reporting and any storage. |
| Installation | Identify fitting, trade connections and excluded work. |
| Revision | Obtain a revised scope when the selected model changes. |
Worked example: both quotes omit the refrigerator price
Suppose both cabinet sellers exclude the refrigerator purchase because the homeowner will order it independently. One quotation includes checking the current model information against the cabinet arrangement; the other leaves that task unspecified. Ask the second provider to state its responsibility before comparing complete scope. If the homeowner changes the refrigerator later, return the changed model to the responsible people rather than assuming the first check still applies.
Questions to settle before ordering
Does buying an appliance myself remove all related labor?
No responsibility follows automatically. Compare the actual work included and excluded in each proposal.
Can I finalize the cabinet opening before choosing a model?
You can discuss a provisional arrangement, but identify the unresolved model and the confirmation needed before affected ordering.
Does a cabinet quote include electrical or plumbing work?
Only if the actual scope says so and the responsible provider has accepted that work. Verify trade responsibilities separately.
