Austin Countertop Guide: Samples, Templating & Costs | HIBC
Product specifications and availability need project-specific confirmation. View the full-resolution inspiration image.
A countertop decision needs more than a color and a price per square foot. Material selection, final templating, edges, seams, sink details, support and installation belong in one coordinated plan. HIBC helps Austin-area homeowners organize materials decisions and request a suitable local product or design introduction after qualification and confirmation.
Compare the actual material
Start with how you cook and care for the kitchen. Ask for the selected material's written care instructions and limitations, including heat, cleaning products, sealing where applicable and repair expectations. Compare appearance, maintenance and the proposed fabrication scope instead of assuming all stone or all engineered surfaces behave alike.
Record the material name, series, color and thickness.
Ask whether a small sample represents the actual slab or supplied surface.
Confirm any required slab viewing or approval and who records that decision.
Bring the cabinet, flooring and backsplash references together.
Keep care instructions and warranty terms for the quoted product.
Turn the design into a fabrication brief
Mark the sink model, faucet holes, cooktop cutout if relevant, exposed edges, backsplash height, overhangs and waterfall ends. Ask the fabricator to explain the proposed seams, support requirements, cutouts and any access constraints. These details may change material use and the price even when two kitchens have similar surface area.
Clarify the installation sequence with the cabinet installer and fabricator. Ask what must be complete and stable before final templating, who provides final field dimensions and what happens if the approved cabinet or appliance plan changes. A first sketch helps planning; it does not replace the final measurements required for fabrication.
Separate replacement from a wider Austin remodel
The City of Austin lists countertops among certain permit-exempt finish work. That does not answer whether related plumbing, electrical, wall or other changes require permits. Moving a sink or changing the kitchen layout can involve a different scope from replacing the surface around existing fixtures. Review the City's Express-remodel criteria and confirm requirements for the actual address and project with the responsible authority.
Ask who owns each step
Identify responsibility for removal and disposal of the old surface, cabinet readiness, templating, fabrication, delivery, installation, sink mounting, plumbing disconnection or reconnection, backsplash work and cleanup. Ask who handles any wall repair or touchups. HIBC's materials and introduction role does not make it the fabricator, plumber or general contractor.
For delivery, describe stairs, elevators, narrow access and the route into the kitchen to the responsible provider. Obtain project-specific access and handling guidance. Do not assume a sample visit confirms that a large finished piece can be delivered or installed as planned.
Read the complete countertop quote
Compare the same material, thickness, edge, sink and layout revision. Ask whether the price includes the material, slab allocation or minimums, cutouts, edges, seams, support, templating, fabrication, removal, freight, delivery, installation and tax. Record exclusions, payment stages, quote validity and change-approval procedures.
For eligible products in the applicable member tier and approved ordering route, pricing is the actual supplier price available to HIBC, without HIBC product markup. Membership, fabrication, freight, tax, installation and other services may remain separate. A material-only quote is not an installed countertop total. Guest cabinet pricing is a separate cabinet option and should not be assumed to apply to countertops.
