Kitchen buying decisions · Albuquerque, New Mexico
Compare the hood as part of the cabinet and installation package
A range hood price is only one part of the decision. The cabinet drawing, proposed exhaust route and installation quote must describe the same selected equipment. Before releasing the upper-cabinet order, compare complete packages: the hood, any surrounding cabinetry, the work needed to install it and the finishes that must be restored.
Give each option one model-and-drawing record
For each option, collect the exact hood model, current manufacturer installation document and cabinet drawing revision. Include the selected cooking appliance so the designer and installer can check the combination. Have them record the applicable dimensions, clearances, mounting requirements and access needs from the actual documents and site conditions.
Keep product approval and installation responsibility visible together. Ask who confirms the cabinet opening and any enclosure details, who verifies the route through the building, and who signs off on the affected order items. A visual layout helps communicate your choices; pair it with the information the installation team needs.
Use the same five checks for both quotes
Copy this worksheet for each package. Write “included,” “separate price” or “unresolved” beside every task, with the responsible party and supporting document.
| Check | What the package must clarify |
|---|---|
| Model | Exact hood and cooking-appliance models, selected configuration, included components and any separately purchased parts. Record the installation-document revision used. |
| Cabinet | Professionally verified opening, surrounding panels or enclosure, mounting details and access for service. Match each affected cabinet item to the drawing. |
| Route | Installer's proposed exhaust path, required ductwork and termination work, access for the work and any unresolved building condition. |
| Trades | Who installs the equipment and ductwork, handles affected electrical work, and arranges required permits and inspections. Identify separate prices and exclusions. |
| Finish | Removal, wall or ceiling repairs, cabinet trim, painting, debris handling and completion checks. State what condition the installer expects before starting. |
Account for Albuquerque's trade scope
The City of Albuquerque permit guidance lists exhaust hood installation under plumbing/mechanical permits. It also lists equipment or ductwork installation as work for a licensed contractor, and separately addresses electrical installations, alterations and replacements. Ask the responsible professionals to identify the applications and work included in your specific proposal.
Confirm that the property is under Albuquerque's authority; Rio Rancho and unincorporated county locations are not covered by this city page. The municipal guidance does not supply your hood's dimensions or installation specifications. Use the current manufacturer documents, qualified professionals and the applicable authority to resolve those requirements.
Worked example: the hood changes after the cabinet quote
Suppose your first package uses one hood model, and you later prefer another with the same advertised width. The new installation sheet shows a different outlet position. The original cabinet drawing and labor quote still refer to the first model.
Keep the affected cabinet items open while the designer and installer compare the new document with the proposed opening, enclosure and exhaust route. Ask whether panels, mounting details, electrical work, ductwork or finish repairs change. Have the supplier update the exact model and parts list and the installer revise the corresponding scope and price.
Compare the revised complete package with the original option before deciding. Record the selected model and drawing revision together; retain the earlier quote as a labeled alternative. A similar advertised width alone is not the comparison needed to approve the surrounding cabinets.
Resolve the last gap before ordering
Read the product and labor quotes side by side. Every required task should have an owner and a price or a clearly identified unresolved allowance. Have the designer and installer confirm final dimensions and dependencies before approving affected cabinet items. Bring unanswered questions to the initial review even if the rest of the kitchen is still taking shape.
