Give everyone the same version of the room

Start with an approximate drawing that identifies the existing appliances, walls, windows and doors. Create a separate proposed version if the layout changes. Date both drawings so a cabinet estimate is not accidentally compared with a contractor’s earlier plan.

Note the improvements you want in everyday use, such as accessible cookware storage or a less crowded cleanup area. Have the responsible installer confirm dimensions, clearances and the suitability of the products for the actual site.

• List appliance model numbers and unresolved selections.

• Mark any proposed wall or utility changes.

Confirm city, county or Illinois jurisdiction first

The City of St. Louis Building Division separates building permits, trade permits and occupancy permits, and provides a search for permits by address. That is a useful starting point for asking which records and approvals apply to your kitchen project. Do not treat an occupancy process as automatically required for every cabinet replacement.
