Planning a kitchen in the Oklahoma City area? Start by separating the cabinets you want to buy from the work needed to install them. A useful first design brief shows what stays, what changes and which measurements or appliance choices still need confirmation. Use the worksheet below to prepare for a design conversation without treating a preliminary layout as a final order. Build an appliance decision sheet
For each appliance, record whether it stays, moves or will be replaced. Bring the exact model information when available, including the manufacturer’s installation instructions. The same advertised appliance width does not establish identical door clearance, ventilation needs or utility connections.
Ask your installer to flag cabinet openings and service access that depend on those decisions. Keep an undecided appliance separate from a confirmed specification so a provisional layout does not quietly become a final order. Photograph outlets, shutoffs and adjacent obstructions without opening equipment.
Cabinet purchase or full remodel? Define the boundary first
A cabinet-only purchase describes what you are buying, not necessarily all the work your kitchen will need. Even when you intend to keep the layout, write down who will remove the old cabinets, verify the room, install the new ones and handle the countertop and appliance interfaces. Do not assume those tasks are included in a cabinet quote.
If you are moving an appliance, sink or wall, describe that separately from your cabinet selection. Ask the appropriate project professionals to identify the resulting electrical, plumbing, ventilation or construction work before relying on the proposed cabinet layout. The label “cabinet replacement” does not answer the permit question; the actual work and the authority for your address need to be checked.

Add a date and revision name at the top of your brief. If an appliance or layout changes, update that revision and send the same version to everyone quoting the affected work. A quote based on one layout should not be treated as confirmation of a later layout.
Finish with three questions: What can be decided now? What is still an assumption? Who confirms each assumption before ordering? A helpful design conversation can begin with unknowns; a final cabinet order should not conceal them.
Use the residential review process for your address
For a project in Oklahoma City, the city's Plan Review page provides application-checklist and permit-search links. It also identifies a homeowner-exemption form for residential building-permit applications made by the homeowner. These are resources for checking the process, not a determination that your particular kitchen needs—or does not need—a permit.
Before following that process, confirm which authority handles the property's address. Then describe the actual planned work, including changes to walls, plumbing, electrical connections or ventilation, and ask which applications or reviews apply and who will submit them. Keep the answer with your project brief. An Oklahoma City-area description is not enough to establish that a home falls under the city's review process.
Do not use an online cabinet purchase, an existing permit record or a provisional design as proof that new work is approved.
Compare equivalent appliance-ready cabinetry
Request a cabinet list tied to a dated layout. Identify appliance panels, trim kits, fillers, ventilation-related cabinet changes and installation materials. Ask whether appliance delivery, removal, connection and testing are included, excluded or provided by someone else.
Compare the complete product and labor scope, delivery charges and applicable taxes before adding the membership fee for the period. Keep optional upgrades on separate lines. That makes it easier to see whether a different total reflects better pricing or simply a different appliance and cabinet package.
