Kitchen buying decisions · Naperville, Illinois
Decide where the cabinets will go before the truck arrives
A delivery address does not tell the provider whether a packed tall cabinet can turn through the entry, who will unload it or where it can wait for installation. Before relying on a delivery date, put the route, service level, receiving contact and storage plan in one brief and ask the actual delivery team to accept it.

Naperville: check temporary storage before booking it
Naperville's Code Enforcement FAQ limits where a mobile storage container may be placed and how long it can remain. It identifies a residential driveway or another hard surface approved by the city engineer, describes a permit requirement beyond 15 consecutive days and sets an annual limit. Check the current conditions with the city before reserving a container or assuming an extended stay will be allowed. Read Naperville's storage-container and remodeling guidance.
The city also identifies kitchen-remodel permit considerations, particularly when walls, electrical work, plumbing or openings change. Keep those project approvals separate from delivery and storage arrangements. These local notes apply to properties within the City of Naperville; Chicago, other suburbs and unincorporated areas have their own authorities.
City placement permission would not confirm that a container protects your particular cabinets. Ask the product provider about storage conditions and ask the delivery team who moves the packages into and out of storage.
1. Give the delivery team the complete route
Ask for the packed dimensions and weight of the largest or most awkward items. A nominal cabinet width is not a shipping dimension. Identify the proposed unloading point, the path to the entrance and the final receiving or storage area.
- Openings: Record clear door and gate openings with trim, hardware and obstructions in place.
- Changes of direction: Photograph narrow turns, landings and transitions for the provider to review.
- Steps and handling: Identify stairs, slopes and any equipment or labor the provider says it needs.
- Building access: Obtain applicable building instructions and arrange any required access reservation with the responsible party.
Preliminary measurements help the provider assess the job. They do not establish that a package can turn, tilt or be moved safely. Ask the delivery team to confirm the whole route or propose a different service before treating access as resolved.
2. Name the delivery service you are buying
Have the quote state the intended handoff point: curbside, threshold, a named room or another agreed location. Ask who unloads, who carries the cabinets, what labor or equipment is included and what happens if the planned route cannot be used. Leave any unanswered charge or responsibility open in your comparison.
For example, if a quote ends at the driveway but the installation team expects the cabinets inside the kitchen, identify who handles that move and obtain their acceptance. Do not assume the installer will be present when the truck arrives.
Record delivery, storage and installation as separate milestones. A supplier's shipping estimate is not a booked arrival window or an accepted installation appointment.
3. Give the receiving person the actual instructions
Before delivery, get the seller's and carrier's applicable instructions for checking packages, recording visible concerns, documenting shortages and reporting a problem. Ask who receives the report, what evidence is needed and which deadlines apply to this order. Share those written instructions and the item list with the person who will receive it.
Keep an issue record with the order reference, photographs where appropriate, dates and the provider's response. Follow the applicable instructions about packaging and further handling. This checklist does not create a claim deadline or tell you to sign away a right.
The Chicago-area order changes and returns guide helps separate a delivery discrepancy from an unwanted item, an order amendment or a cancellation.
Copy this delivery and receiving brief
Use your own private notes or print this list. For each line, record the current answer, the responsible person and the written confirmation. Keep full property and order details in your private project records.
- Project city and building: The correct jurisdiction, applicable building instructions and any open approval question.
- Order and packages: Current item list, packed dimensions, weight information and items requiring special handling.
- Accepted route: Unloading point, clear openings, turns, stairs and the delivery team's confirmation.
- Service boundary: Exact handoff location, unloading/carrying responsibility, included equipment and unresolved charges.
- Receiving: Named receiver, contact method, item list and the seller's/carrier's reporting instructions.
- Storage: Product-provider conditions, accepted location, who moves the packages later and any city or building requirements.
- Date and fallback: Confirmed window, readiness check and the provider's process if access, storage or project timing changes.
Mark each item open, awaiting provider response or accepted with a dated reference. If demolition is delayed or the storage plan changes, ask the affected providers which confirmations and charges must be revisited before accepting a new date.
