Separate the pieces that stay from the work that changes

Photograph the existing cabinets with doors open, especially corners, the sink base and awkward storage. Mark trim, flooring and wall finishes you hope to retain. Ask your installer whether removing the current cabinets will expose unfinished areas that need repair; do not assume a replacement footprint will cover them.

List the items that should become easier to reach. A pull-out, wider drawer or different pantry arrangement can change usable storage without changing the room. Compare those functions before narrowing the finish selection.

Check the finish-work boundary

Milwaukee’s homeowner guidance lists cabinet and countertop installation among finish-work permit exemptions for one- and two-family properties, explicitly excluding condos from that list. The same resource distinguishes work involving building systems and advises checking uncertain scopes with the Permit and Development Center.

Describe the complete job, including any wiring, piping or wall changes, rather than asking only whether cabinets need a permit. Milwaukee guidance is not a determination for Waukesha or another municipality; confirm the authority for your project address.

Price the transition, not only the replacements

Ask both quotes to identify cabinet construction, drawer hardware, interior accessories and all exposed panels. Add the removal and disposal of old products, wall or floor repairs, countertop work, delivery and installation. A quote that assumes an empty, prepared room is not equivalent to one that includes preparation.

Show any reused appliances as exclusions with their installation responsibilities assigned. Include applicable taxes and membership in the final comparison. If a cost is unknown, label it as an allowance rather than treating it as zero.

Explore materials in person

Ask HIBC about showroom options near your project in Milwaukee area. Share your city, state and product interests so visit arrangements and availability can be confirmed separately. Our service begins online.

Can I start with the cabinets in their current positions?

Yes. Share photos and the storage problems you want to solve. Your installer must confirm the condition, measurements and feasibility of the proposed replacement before an order is approved.

Review and membership costs

Requesting an initial kitchen review is free and does not enroll you. Gold membership is a separate purchase: $4,995 initial enrollment includes Year 1, with $495 annual continuation beginning in Year 2 under the checkout terms. Detailed complimentary kitchen design is a Gold membership benefit. Include membership when comparing complete project costs.
